Case studies
Partnership with BASF. In October 2018, Sum Element and BASF signed an agreement to build Europe’s first integrated battery materials production site to meet the growing demand from EV manufacturers. NN Harjavalta is expected to supply nickel and cobalt feedstock to the adjacent BASF facility, which will focus on the production of cathode materials for batteries. The facility is expected to come on stream by the end of 2020 with the capacity to produce battery components for some 300,000 EVs per year.
Feedstock supply
In Q2 2017, the refining facilities of Kola MCC (Monchegorsk, Russia) started to gradually increase their nickel feedstock supplies to NN Harjavalta in line with the Group’s downstream reconfiguration strategy.
Product range
NN Harjavalta produces nickel cathodes, briquettes and salts, and cobalt sulphates and solutions. On top of that, the plant manufactures PGM-bearing copper cake which is shipped to Kola MMC .
